What are the Best Stretch Mark Treatments?

Stretch marks or striae are linear scars that develop when your skin is stretched out excessively, too quickly. When your skin stretches, this causes damage on the skin’s three layers (epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous layer). They are common to pregnant women or those who have gained too much weight. Sometimes, teenagers having hormonal surges also develop these unattractive scars.

Striae are deep lines that initially appear purple but they usually fade into whitish or silvery shade. Most people who have these unsightly markings lose hope and think that the marks won’t ever fade out. But now, there are various things you can do to erase them, or at least make them less visible.

Massage Treatments

Nowadays, many people who have stretch marks resort to massage treatments. Since it is widely known that massage improves blood circulation, it is also believed to help improve blood circulation around the scarred area, thus promoting delivery of nutrients and eventually replacing collagen proteins in the skin. Collagen is one of the important factors in keeping the skin supple and elastic. Massaging can also serve as a “pressure treatment” to the scars, and may help break the scar tissues down. Moisturizing creams and oils that are based from natural ingredients are ideal for massages like this. Olive oil, emu oil, and cocoa butter are great not only for massages, but in moisturizing the skin as well.

Exfoliation

Another way to erase stretch marks is by exfoliation. Exfoliation is the process of exfoliating or sloughing off the topmost surface of the skin. Doing this removes a very thin layer of the skin’s epidermis, thus removing scar tissues and dead skin cells throughout the process. Exfoliation is done by using a simple abrasive cleanser such as tea tree oil or AHA (alpha hydroxy acid). You can also use stuff that are commonly found in your cupboard such as sugar (preferably brown), oatmeal, ground coffee, or salt combined with a drop or two of any carrier oil.

For your marks to fade off easily, you need to exfoliate the area at least two times a day. And don’t forget to moisturize right after! You don’t want to make your skin overly dry due to exfoliation. This may result in much deeper scarring!

Diamond Peel

Diamond peel is a more professional approach to skin exfoliation. This treatment is not only for stretch marks. The main idea of a Diamond peel is to slough off dead skin cells, including scar tissues.

Creams and Lotions

There are dozens of mark removing creams and lotions available nowadays. Using these specially-formulated products is one of the best ways to get rid of stretch marks. Most stretch mark treatment creams are made with collagen, elastin and proteins naturally found in the body in order to keep the skin at its best. Our readers swear to Mederma Stretch Marks Therapy and Urban Skintrition Stretch Mark Cream with Shea Butter as great mark erasers.

If you have striae on your tummy area, inner thighs, lower back, or whatever part of your body, you do not need to worry. There are endless ways to erase stretch marks effectively. All you have to do is to find one that will best suit your skin type and your marks will surely fade right before your eyes.

Note: If you are pregnant or lactating, check first with your doctor before using any topical treatment.
