Glutathione: How Does it Work?

Beauty lies on the eyes of the beholder. And in a country like the Philippines, “white is beautiful”. That’s primarily the reason why most of the popular beauty products that hit the market in the Philippines contain the so-called whitening ingredients such as papaya extracts and just recently, glutathione.

But what is glutathione? Is it really a whitening treatment? How does it work?

Our body is composed of cells. And these cells are damaged by the free radicals present in our environment like the pollutants in the air that we breathe and the foods that we eat. We need antioxidants to fight the free radicals. And glutathione is a substance that acts as an antioxidant, immune system booster and detoxifier. It can help repair body damage caused by stress, pollution, radiation, infection, drugs, poor diets, aging, injury, trauma and burns. It is found in many foods such as in diets high in fresh fruits and vegetables and freshly prepared meats. Other antioxidants are Vit. E (tocopherol), Vit. C (ascorbic acid), Vit. A (retinol and carotenoids), zinc, iron, copper, manganese, selenium and several phytochemicals or plant chemicals.
There are no reports of side effects of glutathione even when taken in large doses, except that it whitens the skin. Yes, whitening of the skin is the side effect of too much glutathione and this is the reason why it is used as a whitening treatment. It whitens the skin by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase to prevent the concerned cells in the skin from manufacturing melanin, the pigment that is responsible for the brown to black coloration of the skin.

Glutathione has no approved therapeutic claim yet so it cannot be marketed as a drug but it can be sold as a food supplement. It is available in capsules for oral intake. It is also a major ingredient in several whitening hand and body lotions, whitening facial creams and whitening soaps.
